Meet the Scholar: Wendy
Wendy was a JRF Scholar for the 2018-2019 Academic Year. She studied at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, FL to get her Bachelor's of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders and her Bachelor's of Science in Psychology. She graduated in May 2019 with Phi Kappa Phi Honors and Summa Cum Laude! Her next step is to go into graduate school and get her Master's in Speech Language Pathology, and complete her dream of being a certified Speech Language Pathologist.
Wendy is a mother of four children, and when she began to think about their futures and their college educations, Wendy realized she herself would need further education to be able to support their goals. So, in 2016 she began her journey to becoming a Speech Language Pathologist, so she could be an example to her children of the incredible benefits of going to college. She also knew that if she wanted to be able to financially support them, she would need a stable income in her own profession.
She decided on Speech Language Pathology because, as she says, "I want a job that will allow me to teach, help, and serve others! I truly do love to serve and becoming an Speech Language Pathologist would allow me to do that whether it is an older stroke victim learning how to speak, or a young child with Autism trying to fit into a conversation. I will get to help serve in my community every single day."
Now, Wendy is well on her way to living out her dreams. She is proud of how far she has come and excited for how far she will go! Reflecting on her time in college and her time as a JRF Scholar, she says: "I am so grateful for all of the support from JRF. Thank you so much for this scholarship award. It is a huge encouragement to have received the Jeannette Rankin Scholarship. It is hard to compete with younger students fresh out of high school, so I am very grateful that this scholarship exists for women like me!"
