Scholar Stories

Melissa, OH
Junior High Instructor
“We were poor even by rural standards. However there was something my parents provided that made us feel wealthy beyond our means: books. I’ve spent 18 years joyfully passing on the love of books while raising my four beautiful daughters,” says 2009 JRF scholar Melissa. After Melissa’s husband lost his job, Melissa knew she had to go back to school. She studied hard and graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Education in 2010. “I am especially drawn to the Junior High age group, as studies indicate it is a difficult time of transition for these students.
I will use my college training and life experiences to help these younger teens gain the confidence to succeed at whatever career path they choose. I can think of no greater gift.”
After graduation, Melissa found a job that she loves as a teacher in Ohio.
