Take Action! – Students and Colleges Can’t Afford to Wait!
Posted on Feb 26, 2010 by JRF
Last September, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (H.R. 3221) was passed in the House. Accounting for one of the single largest investments in higher education ever, this act will make college more affordable for millions of people – with no cost to taxpayers. Because the Senate has yet to vote on the measure, it is critical that you urge your senators to support this legislation! Help make the dream of college a reality for many.
By eliminating taxpayer-funded subsidies for private lenders, H.R. 3221 will save the government and taxpayers almost $87 billion dollars over the next decade. In turn, these savings will be redirected to students and their families through various grants, loans and scholarships. Not only will the bill come at no cost to taxpayers, but also $10 billion of the savings will be directly donated to the federal deficit. In addition, the legislation allows for a focus on women and underrepresented students when awarding college access and completion grants.
In the recent economic recession, college applications and enrollments have skyrocketed as individuals look to increase their skill set. Consequently, debt levels have more than doubled for graduating seniors with student loans. As women are more likely to borrow than men, and will make less on average after graduation, female graduates are more likely to struggle with their loan debt.
